  2. Marietta College is excited to announce our two Summer Associates for this year, Autumn Partlow and Laura Finck! Both Autumn and Laura are students at Marietta College and they bring a wealth of experiences to these projects. Marietta College is a small, private, liberal-arts institution located in Marietta, Ohio. According to the U.S. Census Bureau, 13.5% of Washington County residents lived at or below the poverty level in 2007. In addition, hunger and having the money to buy affordable food items are issues that face people in southeastern Ohio. Because "Service to the Region" is one of the College's core-values, Marietta College students are active in the community through a variety of service projects. This past year, Marietta College adopted a focus on Hunger Relief programming that has engaged students from across the campus. Projects under this Hunger Relief focus have ranged from work with a local community garden to serving free community meals. Both Autumn and Laura will have the opportunity to continue this work through the summer months.

Autumn is a rising junior and she will be working with a local nonprofit organization called, Washington County Harvest of Hope. In her project, she will be working with the Executive Director, Karen Kumpf, to help with marketing campaigns, daily maintenance of the gardens and the creation of mini-farmers market that will be open to a low-income neighborhood in Marietta.

Laura is also a rising junior and she will be working with another local nonprofit organization called Ely Chapman Education Foundation. Laura will work with Executive Director Alice Chapman and the staff at Ely Chapman to organize and implement their Summer Feeding program. This program will be open to any Washington County youth (ages 1-18) and participants will receive a free breakfast, lunch and snack. Laura will be planning the menus, coordinating the meals and taking count of the participants.

Both Autumn and Laura are enthusiastic volunteers with a passion for hunger relief projects. I am excited to work with both of them throughout their Summer Associate terms!
