Hey all, this is Brenna Taylor from Hiram College. While I'm working at Hiram House camp for the summer, I'm teaching a class about food, farming and gardening to campers on a daily basis.
Here are my goals for the summer:
Educate our campers about A) gardens, why we have them, how to create them, care for them, what they can provide for you (nutritional values of veggies!)...show kids where the food in grocery stores comes from.
and B) our farm animals (including 2: sheep, goats, cows and pigs)...how these creatures provide for us, how they grow and eat, and their place in the larger scheme of food production. A challenge I face is creating an engaging way to teach these sometimes daunting concepts to a wide age-range of kids, 6- 13 years. I want to establish some solid hands-on activities that will at least get the wheels turning.
I also aim to keep our animals and garden in a healthy and happy state, reaping some food from the garden to feed campers, if only for a salad bar. I'm hoping I'll learn more while at the task and continue sharing ideas with co-workers and friends.

  1. Brenna - I saw your post and wanted to ask if you are working for the resident or day camp at Hiram House Camp and what do u think of it so far? I signed my son up for the resident camp and have just found out that the resident camp is 85% disadvantaged youth often referred by Children Services, but is not disclosed when you select the resident camp for information/pictures/video/registration it never mentions anything! Why would i pay all that money when i can pay the same exact amount and go to a camp where there aren't depressed, psycho, malnourished, cursing and fatherless kids that he has to sleep with??? I think that is highly unethical and they are intentionally hiding this on their website...tho i paid the fee, I am not sending him there. Hiram House should make that information very clear up front so u can make an informed decision. tho they won't refund my $, I will do everything in my power to get the information out how deceitful they and their website are. I am also going to contact the Attorney General and BBB and complain that they need to be more open and honest with their resident camp information. I heard great things about their day camp, but would never have my child go there now as they are not being open and honest with the resident campers. Hopefully by spreading the word this will hurt their donations and then and only then be forced to be more honest on their website. It's a shame, but everything comes down to money and Hiram House gets a lot of it and only if the money flow is impacted will they take notice and be fair and open with the public who are basically helping to subsidize the disadvantaged kids.
